In viaggio is a Gian Paolo Barbieri exhibition currently on display at 29 Arts in Progress gallery in Milan, until 14 July, showcasing a collection of one of the greatest masters of contemporary photography.
Mostly renowned as a master of fashion photography, this exhibition offers a different view of Barbieri’s work focusing on his trips abroad to Polynesia, Madagascar, the Seychelles and Tahiti. When he first started visiting these exotic lands, in the early 1990s, they offered uncontaminated landscapes, where he captured local people in harmony with nature going about their everyday activities.
Barbieri’s black and white images illustrate the relationship between man and nature, immersed in beautiful landscapes. The photographer describes life and daily activities linked to the ocean and nature, through the lens of a fashion photographer with elegance and precision.
Gian Paolo Barbieri has collaborated with some of the greatest Italian fashion designers – Gianfranco Ferrè, Gianni Versace, Giorgio Armani, Valentino – international brands – Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel and Vivienne Westwood – as well as with prestigious magazines such as Vogue Italia, France and America.
His pictures can be found on display around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in London as well as at the Kunstforum in Vienna and the Multimedia Art Museum Moscow.
